Day 3. Jerusalem: Old and New

The first stop on your full day tour will be at the Mount of Olives, where you will take in a scenic overview of the entire city of Jerusalem. This mountain ridge is east of the Old City of Jerusalem and named for the olive groves that once covered its slopes. The tour then passes through the Garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives. This garden is known as the place where Jesus prayed, and where his disciples slept, the night before his crucifixion. Continue into the Old City through the Zion Gate to Jerusalem’s Cardo, the main thoroughfare of Byzantine Jerusalem. In the Jewish Quarter, visit the Western Wall – the holiest of Jewish sites. Further along in the Christian Quarter, walk along the Via Dolorosa, the street that Jesus traveled on the way to his crucifixion. Here, look for the 14 stations of the cross while retracing Jesus’ steps to the Hill of Calvary at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Also, see the Stone of the Anointing, where Jesus was believed to have been placed before his burial. Finally, leave the Old City through the Jewish Marketplace and end the tour at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust History Museum in New Jerusalem. Then, have the rest of the evening free. Overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 4. Masada and the Dead Sea

Drive along the shores of the Dead Sea to Masada where you will learn about the heroic story of the Jewish fighters. Ascend Masada by cable car to tour the 2000 year old fortress and palace built by King Herod, where the Zealots of the first century made their last stand against the Romans. You will then drive via Ein Gedi, passing by Qumran where you will get a side view of the Qumran caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and then get ready for a float in the mineral-rich Dead Sea – the lowest place on earth. Take a mud-bath and indulge in therapeutic qualities of the natural Dead Sea mud. Return to Jerusalem, where you will stay overnight.

Day 5. Northern Israel

Take the coastal highway to Caesarea, where past and the future merge. While new Caesarea is graced with magnificent modern homes, ancient Caesarea offers tourists the ruins of unique, impressive buildings.  Next, proceed to Haifa, the third largest city in Israel. The city features Israel’s largest port and a particularly active beach, and is the home of the World Center of the Bahai Faith. Visit The Bahai World Center and the magnificent gardens for which it is famous.  At the center is the impressive, gold-domed Shrine of the Bab, the burial place of the Bab, the founder of the faith. Continue to Akko to see the impressive underground Crusader Halls, which were built by the Hospitallers Knights . Walk through the Old City of Acre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see the Oriental Market and the Acre Port. Stay overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 6. Tel Aviv and Old Jaffa

Next, stop at Shenkin, the lively and colorful street specially known for its unique shops, café life, and youthful ambiance. The second part of the tour will be at the Old Jaffa Port. According to Christian legend, Jaffa was named after Noah’s son, Japhet, who built it after the flood. Visitors from both Israel and abroad enjoy dining in its unique restaurants or simply wandering around. Gaze at the ancient Port and  the beauty of the renovated Jaffa harbor set against the back drop of the city of Tel Aviv, which has grown out of Jaffa. Stay overnight in Tel Aviv.

You will spend the day touring Petra, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Petra, also known as the “Red Rose City,” was originally inhabited by the Nabateans, and is a remarkable tourist site. Rediscovered 200 years ago, it is described by UNESCO as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage.” You will explore the famous landmarks and hidden corners of the site, standing in awe at the impressiveness of man’s construction from almost 2,000 years ago.
