It’s hard to deny the allure of Cartagena. It’s colorful, it’s lively, and it’s glamorous, all while maintaining an easygoing and authentic energy. The air of laid-back luxury has visitors flocking from all over the world, ready to experience its unique beaches, bars, and restaurants. It may still be an under-the-radar destination, but we have a feeling that it won’t be for very long.
Cartagena Culture
The Old Town of Cartagena holds colorfully preserved architecture, lively plazas, and an essence of romance within its historic walls. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the spirit of the colonial town is reminiscent of Old Havana, but is much more luxurious with its boutique shops and hotels. Just outside the walls, the hip neighborhood of Getsemani is pulsing with colorful graffiti and street vendors selling fresh fruit. Known as the “culture quarter,” the neighborhood is an artist haven full of painters, poets, musicians, and photographers. The mix of old and new between Cartagena’s neighborhoods is well represented in its skyline.
Food and Nightlife
If you’re looking to party in Carty, there is no shortage of places to eat, drink, and dance. For dinner al fresco, you can’t go wrong with Cafe del Mar. Although it can be a bit touristy, you will be pressed to find a restaurant with a better view in the Old Town. Right in Getsemani’s bustling Plaza de la Trinidad you’ll find a trendy tapas restaurant and bar complete with rocking chairs and a retractable roof for an open-air feeling. For those looking for something a little more authentic, Mister Babilla is the place to be. Arrive at midnight, and join the locals who sing and dance on tables in what is sure to be a memorable evening.
Seeking Adventure
The seaside town has much more to offer than just aesthetics; adventure seekers will find plenty to do in and around Cartagena. The nearby Rosario Islands have much to offer for the traveller looking for a Caribbean paradise. White sand beaches and palm trees meet mangroves offering a diverse landscape that is waiting to be explored. The protected waters surrounding the islands are full of colorful sea life, making it a great place for SCUBA diving or snorkeling. A kayak tour is a unique way to wind through mangrove-formed tunnels and appreciate the natural beauty of the surrounding areas. When the sun goes down, the Rosario Islands still offer surreal beauty in Isla Grande’s Enchanted Lagoon. When the night sky is absent of the moon and stars, the lagoon illuminates with glowing green light from phytoplankton in the water creating a natural phenomenon.
Is it Safe?
Crime rates in the city are fairly low, and incidents are very rarely violent, according to the US Department of State. As with many big cities, the most common crimes in Cartagena are scams and petty theft. Remaining aware of your surroundings, vigilant with your belongings, and conservative with your valuables are good ways of avoiding crime in Cartagena.
