Don’t forget a heavy jacket!

Iceland has become one of the most popular travel destinations as of late, and the reasons lie in the landscape. Although it is home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, the country seems to deny its own name. From massive waterfalls and volcanic cliffs, to small villages and cultivated farmland, the backdrop of Iceland is truly diverse.

Skógafoss, Skógar

The Laugavegur Trail is a hiker’s dream. Connecting Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk Nature Reserves, the 49-mile trek begins inland, winding through multi-colored mountains, natural hot springs, and glaciers. The trail’s end at Þórsmörk gives hikers the opportunity to continue their trip with the route’s extension, Fimmvörðuháls. The extension path is laden with waterfalls, ending on the southern coast at the breathtaking Skógafoss. If you decide to hike the trail, be prepared: the trek typically takes three to five days, and is only open from late June through August.

Öxarárfoss, Þingvellir

If hiking isn’t your thing, Iceland’s beauty is not lost on a drive of the Golden Circle. A popular tourist attraction, the roads are well maintained and rental cars are affordable. The road out of the country’s capital city, Reykjavík, highlights three major sites: the Great Geysir, Þingvellir National Park, and the Gullfoss Waterfall.

Laugavegur Street, Reykjavík

Spending the day in Reykjavík won’t leave you with any shortage of things to do. The colorful city is a great place for shopping on Laugavegur, or for taking in some live music and drinks. The Blue Lagoon, close to the town of Grindavík

Before heading to your flight back home, be sure to stop by the Blue Lagoon. Located 24 miles southwest of Reykjavík, this geothermal spa is situated right in the middle of a lava field. With its warm waters and supposed healing powers, it’s no wonder why the pool is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland.
